Go Phishin' ... again

Well, it happened and I am sure you heard about this already (I didn't get to a PC until now, sue me!) The (in)famous rock/jam band Phish will be playing three shows in early 2009:

Phish returns to the stage for three concerts at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia on March 6, 7 and 8, 2009.
Their main page is showing a flash video of an artist creating what will most likely be the poster art for the shows along with enigmatic "Phish 3 678 9" before revealing the dates at the end. The traffic to the page is undoubtedly massive ... as will be the ticket pages/outlets when they go on sale.

Move over Farmer Ben ... Meet Farmer Dave!

The South Coast Gazette posted an article this morning highlighting a Farm Aid panel with produce farmer Dave Purpura, owner of Plato's Harvest in Middleborough, MA. What does this have to moe.? Well, during the panel, Purpura was joined by our very own Al, Rob, and Vinnie.

The panel was part of the Homegrown Village stage of Farm Aid, where Purpura discussed his sucess and qualms with the produce industry.

The message: buy local, support family farmers rang out from both the artists and concert goers.

It's not just about fresh food and sustainable agriculture. Food that's shipped from South America uses up a tremendous amount of natural resources making its way across the continent. moe. guitarist Al Schnier, said, "If we all were part of the equation, supporting local farmers just a bit more, the environmental impact would be remarkable."

Despite ribbing from the band moe. who dubbed him Farmer Dave, Mr. Purpura said it wasn't a mid-life crisis that made him turn from an engineering career to organic farming. "It was kind of planned, it was always my intention."

How interested would you be in user-submitted reviews?

We are always trying to expand our content here at moe.rons.com and this has been an idea I have tossed around for awhile. Some of you may have remember I asked this very same question months ago on the previous news page. Well, I am here to find out again.

So, turn your eyes a little to the right and down and you should see the poll. Let us know your opinion! Also, feel free to comment on this news post or in the forums your own thoughts on this question. Help us help you.

Achieving a distinctive sound?

Jambands.com just today put up an article/interview with New York City based jam band Licorice that may or may not include a remark at our beloved Satan's expense. Near the middle of the interview, a question is postulated about the bands "distinct sound" and how it differentiates them from other jam bands. Granted, this is question lobbied at many bands, especially new or "up-and-coming" groups. In this instance, David Lott, the band's guitarist and vocalist, brings up moe. and Satan himself, Chucky.

The discussion turns to whether developing a distinctive sound, as a band or as a musician, is a boon or bane with moe. and their exceptional musicianship becoming a recurring example. “I think Licorice has a sound,” says Lott while we’re bantering the question around. “I don’t think I’ve reached the point where I have an individual sound. It’s the moe. thing,” he continues. “I can hear moe. a mile away and know that it’s moe. but if Chuck Garvey was in a band with 50 other musicians and all I was doing was listening, I don’t think I would be able to tell that that’s ‘Chuck Garvey from moe.,’ he explains. “I don’t mean that to sound disrespectful,” he clarifies. “He’s an incredible guitar player.”
Interesting quote, and one I have re-read a couple times. It seems to me that Lott is saying that Chuck doesn't have his own "distinct sound" and therefore blends into whatever he is doing to the point you can't differeniate him from the average guitar player.

What say you? Leave us a comment or send your own opinion to tips@moerons.com

moe.'s Farm Aid 2008 set list

Short, but sweet, moe. performed this past Saturday at Farm Aid 2008. They performed a 15-minute set at around 2:40 EST.

Set: All Roads Lead to Home, Darkness > Tailspin

Currently, some of the live webcast is being shown on the Farm Aid page. I am unsure whether moe.'s performance is part of it.

You can check out the webcast HERE
